COUNTRY PRESENTATION

Mauritius (French: Île Maurice, Mauritian Creole: Maurice) is situated in the Indian Ocean, approximately 2 400 kilometres off the south-east coast of Africa. The island, which is of volcanic origin, covers an area of 1 865 square kilometres or 720 square miles. Coral reefs surround most of the coast except in the south.

The island boasts more than 90 miles of white sandy beaches and clear-water lagoons, protected from the open sea by the world’s third largest coral reef. Beautiful mountain scenery and dense tropical forests add to the natural beauty of the island.

The island also offers gentle, swaying fields of sugar cane, outstanding hotels and a delectable cuisine that blends Indian, Creole and French cooking to brilliant effect. But, above all, it is the warm hospitality of the Mauritian people that makes this idyllic island such a unique incentive destination.

WHEN TO VISIT

Between January and April the weather in Mauritius is at its hottest and most humid, with temperatures reaching above 30o C (86o F). It does rain at this time of the year, but tends to come in heavy, short-lived showers. During February, Mauritius occasionally experiences the tail winds from anti-cyclones, which generally last a couple of days. Once an anti-cyclone has passed, the result is typically warmer and less humid conditions.

May to August are the ‘cooler’ months in Mauritius, although the day time temperatures remain warm at an average 25o C (77o F). During this period, the west coast of Mauritius is generally a few degrees warmer than the East, due to the east coast trade winds.

September to December is known as a great time to visit Mauritius, the temperatures are higher, traditionally between 27o C (80o F) and 30o C (86 o F), and the humidity is lower.

HOW TO GET THERE

The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport at Plaisance, in the south-east of the island, is the major gateway for travellers coming from abroad.

Air Mauritius is the home carrier and operates a network of routes to the local islands and to international destinations in Africa, Australia, Europe and Asia.

International Airlines, including Air France, Emirates, British Airways, Condor, Euro Wings, South African Airways, Air India, Turkish Airlines, Kenya Airways, Egypt Air and Malaysia Airlines serve Mauritius from their home base.

Mauritius is a 12 hours non-stop flight from London. Flight departures usually take place in the evening, arriving in Mauritius the next morning.

For resorts on the East Coast, transfer time is around 30 minutes, while the capital, Port Louis, and resorts in the north take around one hour by road.
